C/R: Killer of Cape Coast dancehall artiste sentenced to death

The High Court in Cape Coast has sentenced Bright Ellis, the man accused of killing Cape Coast-based dancehall artiste Unruly Grank, to death.

The court, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Lodoh, sentenced the accused person to death by hanging.

Reacting to the court’s decision, the mother of the deceased dancehall artiste, Kate Swanzy, was happy that justice had been served.

“It is true that my son will never come back to life but I’m glad justice has been served. I thank God for this,” she said.

She also commended the Attorney General and the presiding judge on the case for allowing the law to take its course.

The up-and-coming dancehall artiste was stabbed to death.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 7 February 2021, during a ‘rap battle’.

The artiste, whose real name was Emmanuel Aikins, 24, was stabbed during a misunderstanding between him and an artisan, Bright Ellis, 27, at the Orange Beach Resort.

The artiste was pronounced dead at the Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital where he had been taken.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sergeant Isaac Evans Entie, explained that a fight broke out between the suspect and another dancehall artiste in Cape Coast over who was more popular when the two met for a ‘rap battle.’

The melee turned bloody among the artistes and their fans.

This led to Ellis stabbing Emmanuel.

The police launched investigations into the incident, and the suspect was arraigned.
