Ghana committed to stability on the continent – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has told Members of the Diplomatic Corp in the country that Ghana remains committed to the joint continental effort to ensure peace and stability on the continent.

He noted that as the far as the interests of Africa are concerned, “we seek collectively a peaceful and secure Africa based on the progressive ideals of fostering democracy, good governance, respect for human rights, social justice and the rule of law.”

Nana Akufo-Addo told them this on Tuesday, 28th February 2023, when he exchanged New Year Greetings with Members of the Diplomatic Corps, at the Peduase Lodge.

The New Year greetings is an annual event which affords the President the opportunity to exchange greetings, interact with members of the diplomatic corps, to affirm the country’s shared commitment and dedication to strengthening existing bonds of friendship, cooperation, goodwill and solidarity between Ghana and their respective countries and organisations, and to wish them a Happy New Year.

The President also said the Paris Club and the government of China are cooperating with Ghana on her quest to restructure its external debts so as to meet the timeline for securing a board-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund for the $3-billion extended credit facility to bailout the ailing economy.

President Akufo-Addo believes once that hurdle is crossed, the IMF deal would be as good as done within this month.

Mr Akufo-Addo said: “Just as we managed to get the staff-level agreement in record time in December last year, whose terms we’re systematically fulfilling, including the difficult but ultimately highly successful process of the domestic debt exchange programme, I’m confident that with the cooperation that we’re receiving from the Paris Club and the People’s Republic of China, which has sent a delegation from China’s EXIM Bank to Accra over the weekend to meet with officials of the Ministry of Finance, we shall be able to go to the board of the Fund to conclude finally the agreement by the end of March”.

“This will set the stage for the strong recovery of Ghana’s economy”, he noted.
