Black Stars forward Mohammed Kudus has dedicated his goal of the month award to the late Christian Atsu.

On February 19, a day after the confirmation of Atsu’s passing, the 22-year-old sealed Ajax’s 4-0 thrashing of Sparta Rotterdam with a superb free-kick for his 14th goal of the season. During the celebration, Kudus lifted his shirt to reveal the words “RIP Atsu” inscribed on his vest.

Despite not sharing the dressing room with Atsu, Kudus said he admired his talent.

“Yeah, we all know what’s happened in Turkey and Syria with all the earthquake and stuff so it’s a very difficult period for us human beings and Atsu is someone I know on a personal level so it hit different

“A lot you know. We all know his career and he’s played for a lot of top teams in the Premier League, he’s played here [in the Eredivisie] and he is my countryman.

“I grew up watching him and learning a few things from how he played and stuff like that so it’s hard but you get to know we need to appreciate life more.

“Everything can just go off at one time so we just need to make the most out of every single day like it’s our last day on earth good lesson for all of us.

“Yeah[ the goal of the month trophy is for Atsu]. I will remember this trophy forever. Anytime I see the trophy and remember the free-kick the celebration is definitely going to come to mind. This is going to be with me forever. It’s a special one for me,” he told Ajax TV.

Kudus has scored 17 goals this season for Ajax in all competitions.
