Russia-Africa Summit to take place in St Petersburg July 27

The second Russia-Africa Summit is scheduled to be held at St Petersburg’s Expo Forum from 27-28 July 2023, with leaders from a majority of African countries expected to attend.

The summit aims to strengthen the partnership between Russia and Africa and promote comprehensive cooperation in various sectors, including politics, security, economics, science and technology, and culture.

Originally planned to take place in Addis Ababa in October 2022, the summit was postponed by President Vladimir Putin, possibly due to complications arising from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The event was initially scheduled for four days but has now been limited to two days for program adjustments.

The Russia-Africa Summit is described by the organisers, Roscongress, as the most significant event in Russia-Africa relations, with the goal of fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.

The summit follows the format of other similar gatherings, such as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, Japan’s TICAD, and the US-Africa Leaders Summit.

The first Russia-Africa Summit was held in Sochi in October 2019 under the theme “For Peace, Security, and Development.” It brought together 45 African heads of state, along with ministers and representatives from various regional organizations. The summit emphasized the strategic partnership between Africa and Russia, covering areas such as agriculture, natural resources, trade, infrastructure, and military cooperation.

In addition to the summit, the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum will also take place, providing a platform for business meetings and showcasing a large-scale exhibition. The previous edition of the forum resulted in the signing of numerous contracts and memoranda of understanding.

While some African countries have taken a neutral stance on the conflict in Ukraine, the war’s impact on fuel and grain prices has affected the African continent.

A delegation of African leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, President Macky Sall of Senegal, and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, recently visited Kyiv and St Petersburg in an effort to seek peace and diplomatic resolutions.
