Hughton confirms Ghana remain interested in Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi

Chris Hughton has confirmed that there are talks ongoing between Ghana and English-born Ghanaians Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi to switch allegiance to Ghana.

The duo have been on the radar of Ghana in the last few years among other players of Ghanaian descent as the nation seek to strengthen the Black Stars for future competitions.

In July 2022, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the completion of the nationality switch of six players including Inaki Williams and Tariq Lamptey.

However, two of the players who have both featured in the English junior teams like Tariq Lamptey were Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah who were unfortunately not part of the six players.

However, both attackers are still eligible to represent Ghana if they wish and Hughton has revealed that, there are plans to keep convincing them to make a decision to favour Ghana.

“We have been in contact with them [Eddie Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi]. Not only in my time but I think before. So I think it is a process. Ultimately it would be about both of them making that decision that they want to play. But we have been in good dialogue with them and some of them as you say is understandable,” Hughton told Talksport.

“Two very good players. Hudson Odoi probably last season didn’t play the number of games that he would have liked. But I think that was a little bit more than to the system because they played three at the back so it looked like he was going to be deployed mostly at wing back so Hopefully wherever he ends up this season he plays more regularly. Maybe that means we get the process starts again,” he added.

Eddie Nketiah who was in fine form for Arsenal last season scoring vital goals in the absence of Gabriel Jesus has been paying visits to GHana already. Meanwhile, Hudson-Odoi is expected to leave Chelsea this summer with Fulham said to be the likeliest destination. He has also paid a visit to Ghana a few times.
