Sports Ministry clarifies payments to Akonnor: Over $200k outstanding

Sports Ministry clarifies payments to Akonnor: Over $200k outstanding

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has issued a statement clarifying the contractual payments owed to Charles Akonnor after the former Black Stars coach contested claims made by Minister Mustapha Ussif that he received $100,000 upon the termination of his contract.

In a press briefing last week, Minister Ussif explained that the government still owes Akonnor, over a year after his contract was terminated due to poor results. Akonnor, who was appointed in January 2020 under a two-year contract, had outstanding salary arrears at the time of his dismissal, and he is still pursuing payment for those dues.

Contrary to the Minister’s assertion that Akonnor was paid $100,000 as part of an exit package, the former coach disputed the claim, stating that he never received any such payment.

He revealed, “I never received the kind of money the minister mentioned. I don’t want to put out how much they paid me, but it was not $100,000 as the Minister said,” as reported by Graphic Sports.

In response to Akonnor’s claims, the Ministry of Youth and Sports released a detailed breakdown of the payments made to the former coach after his contract termination:

“On 22nd October 2021, Akonnor was paid GHC318,378.41, equivalent to $54,054.06 at a rate of 5.89.”

“On 10th February 2022, he received GHC335,675.71, equivalent to $54,054.06 at a rate of 6.21.”

“On 12th January 2023, an amount of GHC860,000.00, equivalent to $100,000, was disbursed at a rate of 8.60.”

“On 27th July 2023, a $30,000.00 payment was made by cheque, which Akonnor declined and instead requested a bank transfer. The transfer was executed on Monday 31st July 2023.”

“A total sum of payments made to Akonnor amounts to $238,108.12, leaving an outstanding balance of $220,000,” Ministry revealed.

The Ministry emphasised that the contractual agreement between Akonnor and the Ghana Football Association contains detailed provisions that can be referred to for verification.

During his tenure as the coach, Akonnor oversaw 10 games, with four wins, four losses, and two draws, leading to his dismissal.
