Chris Hughton encourages Eddie Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi to make Ghana switch August 2, 2023 Reading Time: 2 mins read

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton has revealed he has spoken to Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi about switching allegiance to Ghana.

The two players have already played for England at various age levels while Hudson-Odoi has even played at senior level.

In total, the Chelsea star has three caps for the Three Lions, earning them in competitive matches as well.
Nketiah, meanwhile, is the all-time highest goalscorer at Under-21 level for England with 16 goals in 17 appearances.

But both could still make the switch to Ghana after being snubbed by Three Lions boss, Gareth Southgate in recent years.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Premier League boss said: “It is understandable, particularly for someone like myself who was born here.

“I have an Irish mother, Ghanaian father, and chose to play for Ireland at that particular time.

“These are two players that have represented England at quite a few of the underage teams.

So some of it is understandable. We have been in contact with them. Not just in my time, I think from before as well. It is a process.

“But ultimately it will be about both of them making the decision that they want to play. But we have had good dialogue with them.”

Hudson-Odoi has long been linked with an international switch despite playing competitively for England.

He first did so at the age of 18 years and 135 days, breaking the record set by Duncan Edwards in 1955 by 40 days for the youngest-ever player to make his debut in a competitive match.

That came in March 2019 against the Czech Republic and he went on to play twice more for the Three Lions.

But after an ACL injury that has ravaged his first-team chances at club and national level, he now looks set to make a bargain move to Fulham.

Nketiah, meanwhile, recently penned a new contract worth £100,000-a-week at Arsenal and is seen as Mikel Arteta’s back-up striker to Gabriel Jesus.
