I didn’t mind Fred Nuamah contesting in Ayawaso West Wuogon but I felt like the contest wasn’t needed – John Dumelo

The National Democratic Congress candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuguon constituency, Mr John Setor Dumelo has offered insights on the contest that unfolded between him and his close friend, Fred Nuamah.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with host, Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight on TV3, Dumelo, who had previously vied for the same constituency in the 2020 elections, described the internal competition between himself and his best man as ‘unnecessary’.

“I didn’t mind the contest, but I felt like a contest wasn’t needed. It wasn’t necessary because the party looked at Ayawaso West as a different case, because I had contested in 2020,” he candidly expressed.

According to Actor turned politician, any decision to change the candidate had the potential to disrupt the party’s standing in the constituency ahead of the 2024 elections.

“We did extremely well, we nearly won, and we lost by a small margin. So it would have been suicidal to change the candidate. So, in a democracy, a lot of negotiations had to go on.

Together, Fred Nuamah and myself will make sure we win the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat for the NDC – John Dumelo

He further disclosed that they were deliberations and negotiations that took place within the party to finally select him as the most suitable candidate for the ticket.

“As a Democratic party, you had to sit down and do your research, you had to decide that, for this place, let’s change this person, and so on,” he stated.

The selection of John Dumelo as the NDC’s official candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuguon Constituency on Sunday, August 13, marked his second consecutive bid for the position.

This decision comes after the party successfully facilitated an agreement between the other two contestants including the C.E.O of the Ghana Movie Awards, leading them to withdraw from the race and pledge their support to Mr. Dumelo.

Despite previous differences, Nuamah expressed his commitment to the NDC’s unity and the overarching goal of the “President John Mahama project,” aimed at revitalizing the nation.

Fred Nuamah stated, “I wholeheartedly endorse and throw my support behind my good friend and brother, Mr. John Dumelo, to be the parliamentary candidate for the NDC in the Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency.”

He urged his supporters within the party to rally behind Dumelo and provide him with the necessary backing, fostering a renewed sense of unity and purpose.
