President of Ghanaians resident in Niger appeals to ECOWAS to lift sanctions imposed on the country

The President of the Ghanaian ccommunity in Niger, Abudu Seidu, has called on the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to lift the sanctions against Niger.

According to him, the sanctions are affecting trade across borders. He cited onion traders whose wares are getting rotten. According to Abudu Seidu, Niger is a major market for onion traders, but due to the closed borders, many traders with trucks load of onions are stuck.

In an interview with Alfred Ocansey on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, he appealed to the ECOWAS authorities to hold peace talks with leadership of the junta to open the borders of Niger.

“A lot of traders deal in onions and are currently stuck with trucks full of their onions at the borders. If the ECOWAS can take the sanctions out, I think it will be very good because now all the borders have been closed. You know many Ghanaians are trading in onions; many of the traders cannot cross the border; and many onions are going bad, so this is a big problem for the onion traders, and that one is a big problem”

“So, if there is anything our leaders can do, they should try to take out the sanctions. They can go through peace talks; it will really help all the people living there.”

According to Seidu Abudu, members of the Ghanaian community are doing well.

“The situation is calm, and we don’t have any problems right now concerning food or the rest.”

Mr. Seidu Abudu also revealed that they have been in constant touch with Ghanaian authorities at the embassy.
