Jinapor: I’ll vote against 2024 budget if it includes new taxes

The Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency, Mr John Jinapor, has hinted at voting against the 2024 budget if it includes new taxes.

The MP, a member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, mentioned that he would only vote in favour of such a budget if directed by his party’s leadership to do so.
Expressing his concerns, he argued that the current economic climate is not suitable for the introduction of new taxes.

He alleged that the Finance Minister aims to generate approximately GHS11 million through taxes in the 2024 budget, equivalent to one per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He criticised this move, citing the numerous taxes introduced by the government in recent years.

The MP emphasised his support for measures to reduce expenditures rather than the imposition of new taxes.

He cautioned against excessive taxation, stating that it could lead to evasion and a decrease in revenue.

Urging the Majority to prioritise the interests of the people over personal agendas, he stated that, as the Minority, they would advocate the interests of Ghanaians, even if success might be unlikely.

These remarks were made in anticipation of the Finance Minister’s presentation of the budget on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, as conveyed during an interview on Accra-based Asempa FM.
