NAM1 paid ¢2.5m not ¢5m as deposit to pay customers – AG

The government has refuted claims made by the Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Menzgold Ghana Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1, regarding a purported GHS5 million deposit with the Ghana Police Service for the benefit of customers.

In a statement, NAM1 asserted that he had handed over GHS5 million to the Ghana Police Service on Friday, 20 October 2023, with the intention of distributing the funds to customers of the collapsed gold-trading company.

He specified that the money was allocated for customers who had successfully completed a verification process conducted by the company, including those entitled to a GHS2.5 million judgment debt.

However, appearing before Parliament, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, contradicted NAM1’s statement.

He revealed that the records indicated only GHS2.5 million was received from NAM1, disputing the reported GHS5 million.

He revealed that the records indicated only GHS2.5 million was received from NAM1, disputing the reported GHS5 million.

“The record I have before me indicates that an amount of GHS2.5 million was paid, so the claim of GH¢5 million having been paid to the Ghana Police Service is untrue. It was only GHS2.5 million that was paid to the Ghana Police Service by the accused person,” Mr Dame stated.
