Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, has called for a thorough investigation into illegal small mining (Galamsey) to uncover the financiers of the illegal miners.
He noted that the illegal miners who usually get arrested in the pit do not have the wherewithal to procure the heavy-duty equipment used in the illicit mining practices.
The real financiers are hiding and pushing the young men to go into the practice., he said,
Commenting on the jailing of Chinese national Aisha Huang who was sentenced for engaging in galamsey, whilst speaking on the Big Issue on TV3 Wednesday, December 6, Mr Adams said: “Investigations should go all the way to getting persons who are financing, persons who are purchasing all that equipment.”
The High Court presided over by Justice Lydia Osei-Marfo, on Monday, December 4 sentenced Aisha Huang to four years in prison under the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2015 (Act 900) after being found guilty of engaging in Galamsey.
