The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched a fierce attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the ruling government of betraying Ghana’s post-independence ideals and stalling the nation’s progress.
Commemorating Ghana’s transition to a Republic on July 1, 1960, Fifi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, condemned the NPP administration for its perceived failures in economic management and governance.
Speaking on the 64th anniversary of Ghana’s Republic Day, Mr. Kwetey lamented the current state of the nation, asserting that the NPP’s failures have eclipsed the vision of Ghana’s founding fathers.
“On July 1, 1960, Ghana became an independent republic, with Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah as its first president. This historic day marked the beginning of Ghana’s journey as a beacon of progress and a shining star of Africa. Today, however, the promise of those early years has been overshadowed by the failures of the current NPP administration,” Mr. Kwetey said.
He did not hold back in his criticism, accusing the NPP of leading a government “lacking credibility and patriotism,” which he claimed has resulted in a floundering economy, soaring youth unemployment, and crumbling public services.
“An economy in disarray, youth unemployment at an all-time high, the quality of our education and healthcare systems in fast deterioration. Citizens are burdened with excessive taxes, businesses struggling to survive, and the hope and dignity of our people are at their lowest ebb,” Mr. Kwetey asserted.
The NDC’s statement also served as a rallying cry for Ghanaians to support their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December general elections.
“We are aware of the NPP’s desperation to cling to power and their palpable attempts to subvert the will of the people. Therefore, we need you to be vigilant and report any suspicious deeds,” Mr. Kwetey urged.
He emphasised the NDC’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
The NDC’s General Secretary went on to champion Mahama’s previous tenure as President, highlighting his accomplishments and presenting him as the key to Ghana’s future success.
“H.E. John Mahama is the leader Ghana needs. His vision for a prosperous, inclusive Ghana, combined with his unparalleled experience, makes him the ideal candidate.
“Under his previous tenure, he achieved significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. His administration was marked by transparency and accountability, demonstrating a genuine concern for the people. H.E. John Mahama embodies integrity, credibility, and a commitment to public service—essential qualities to restore hope and drive meaningful change in Ghana,” he stated.
