Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that Ghana requires a strategic upgrade to propel it forward rather than a complete reset as proposed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
At a maiden media encounter held in Accra on Sunday, August 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that Ghana’s economy, which he described as ‘rebounding,’ needs continued growth and expansion rather than a reversal of the progress made under the current NPP administration.
“Ghana does not need a reset; it needs an upgrade,” Dr. Bawumia asserted. He added, “Our economy is on the path to recovery, and we must build on the gains we’ve made to ensure a brighter future for all Ghanaians.”
He pointed to several economic indicators that point to a rebounding economy and reasons why the country needs to continue on this trajectory rather than an overhaul.
He reflected on the role of the media in promoting democratic governance, acknowledging the NPP’s contributions to media freedoms, including the repeal of the criminal libel law and the passage of the Right to Information Act.
“The media is an important ally in our national development agenda, and our quest to expand the frontiers of democratic governance in Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
During the encounter, Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the NPP’s 2024 manifesto, which was unveiled in Takoradi.
The manifesto, according to him, offers a comprehensive plan to sustain economic recovery, reduce the cost of living, stabilise the currency, empower businesses, and create jobs.
“We have laid down comprehensive economic proposals to sustain the rebounding economy, reduce the cost of living, stabilise the currency, empower businesses, reform the tax administration, and deliver jobs,” he emphasised.
Dr. Bawumia outlined his 14 key commitments to Ghanaians, which include expanding public infrastructure, providing better healthcare, and transforming Ghana into a world-class digital economy.
He reiterated his belief that Ghana’s path forward lies in building upon existing successes rather than starting over.
