AFCON 2025Q: CAF concludes inspection of Accra and Cape Coast Stadia for possible approval

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has concluded the inspection of the Accra and Cape Coast stadia ahead of Ghana’s matchday 3 AFCON 2025 qualifier against Sudan.

The continent’s football governing body, a few weeks ago, withdrew the Baba Yara Stadium’s approval for hosting CAF category C games, recommending reconstruction of the pitch, as well as that of Accra and Cape Coast stadia.

Ghana was instructed to choose an approved venue outside the country for October’s AFCON qualifier at home against Sudan.

Despite this directive, the Ministry of Youth and Sports asked the Ghana FA to write to CAF to inspect the Accra and Legon stadia and consider either of the them for games.

Last week, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif revealed that CAF had not responded to the country’s request to inspect the pitches.

However, Joy Sports understands that CAF inspectors were in Ghana over the weekend, to inspect the Accra and Cape Coast Stadia upon the request of the Ministry of Sports.

The inspection team were at the Accra stadium on Friday and proceeded to inspect Cape Coast on Saturday.

The GFA, Sports Ministry, and National Sports Authority have been asked to fulfil certain conditions at the venues inspected.

Ghana is now likely to receive temporary approval for the October AFCON qualifiers, if either of stadia is deemed fit for purpose.
