Galamsey fight: We’ll proceed with planned demo, strike – TUC

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced it will proceed with its planned nationwide strike or protest following a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

On September 11, the TUC warned that it would initiate a nationwide strike by the end of September if the government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, failed to declare a state of emergency to address the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis.

The union will meet on Tuesday to finalize plans for the protest, aimed at pressuring the government to take decisive action against galamsey.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu confirmed that they are prepared to move forward with their planned actions, depending on the outcome of the meeting.

“Yes, we are going to act on our threat based on the decisions that we will take God willing when we meet our structures and we will firm up our earlier decision either to go on strike or to embark on demonstration,” he stated.

Concerning going to the negotiation table with the government, Mr Owusu indicated “…We’ve said this, and we’ve said it over and over and I think the government is not forthcoming with answers. It is the reason we are meeting [on Tuesday] to firm up.”
