Fact-Check: Bawumia’s claim that Ghana has achieved “zero hunger” FALSE!

Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has claimed that Ghana is on a list of countries with “zero hunger”.

He made this assertion during his youth connect meeting at the Borteyman Sport Complex on November 3, 2024.

However, checks by the JoyNews Research Desk have revealed that this claim is FALSE!

Data contained in the 2024 Sustainable Development Report, shows that no country has achieved SDG Goal 2 which seeks to eradicate hunger by 2030.

In fact, the report flags Ghana as one of the numerous countries with “major challenges” in achieving this goal although moderately increasing towards it.

The 2024 dashboard also shows achieving “Zero Hunger,” a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) set by the United Nations to eradicate hunger, remains a significant challenge.

Globally, only a few countries have made substantial strides toward reducing hunger rates to low or minimal levels, but no country has fully achieved the Zero Hunger goal due to ongoing issues like food insecurity, malnutrition, and economic inequality.

In Ghana, the report stressed that the prevalence of undernourishment is 4.9% of the population, while the prevalence of stunting in children under five years of age stands at 17.5%.
