TEWU-TUC set to strike today over unresolved service conditions

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) is set to begin a nationwide strike today, Monday, November 18, in protest over the government’s failure to address longstanding concerns regarding their conditions of service.

TEWU-TUC has expressed significant frustration with the government’s delays in concluding, signing, and implementing revised conditions of service for workers under the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, as well as Public Technical and Traditional Universities.

The union has highlighted that negotiations for these revisions have been ongoing for several years without resolution, leading to growing dissatisfaction among its members.

The union argues that the lack of progress on these matters is untenable and has reached a point where industrial action is seen as the only way to push for change.

TEWU-TUC maintains that the failure to resolve these issues is detrimental to the welfare of its members and the effective functioning of these key institutions.

In response to the strike action, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has called a meeting for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, with TEWU-TUC and other relevant stakeholders.

The NLC aims to mediate the ongoing dispute and facilitate discussions aimed at finding a resolution to the concerns raised by the union.

The strike is expected to disrupt services in the affected sectors, with TEWU-TUC stating that they will continue their industrial action until their grievances are properly addressed.

The union has called for swift action from the government to finalise and implement the revised conditions of service for its members.
