Bawumia’s pedigree is not about rigging –Kofi Tonto to Mahama

An aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has dismissed claims by former President John Dramani Mahama that the Electoral Commission (EC) is colluding with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Speaking on the Ghana Yensom Morning Show on Accra 100.5 FM, co-hosted by Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku and Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on Tuesday, November 27, 2024, Mr. Tonto described the accusation as baseless and inconsistent with the Vice President’s character.

“It is not in Dr. Bawumia’s pedigree to rig elections,” he stated.

“The electoral process is extremely transparent, with all 13 presidential aspirants having their agents at various polling stations and collation centres.

Can Dr. Bawumia pay all these aspirants to allow the NPP to rig the elections?” he questioned.

He also emphasized the rigorous nature of Ghana’s electoral process, noting that ballots are often recounted multiple times at regional collation centres before declarations are made.

Mr. Tonto attributed the accusations to the impact of Dr. Bawumia’s grassroots campaign, which he claims has unsettled the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“In the last three months alone, Dr. Bawumia has visited 270 constituencies, meeting three to four constituents daily as part of his campaign.

Why would someone preparing to rig work this hard?” he asked.

He further criticized the NDC for focusing on perceived negatives of the NPP government during their campaign, arguing that this strategy was not resonating with voters.

“The NDC thought they could capitalize on the government’s shortcomings, but their approach is not yielding results,” he concluded.
