Finance Minister absent again as Mini Budget presentation stalls

The Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, was again absent from Parliament today, failing to present the anticipated mini-budget.

This marks the second consecutive day that the scheduled budget presentation has been delayed since the house was recalled yesterday.

The absence of the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and other key members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) front bench further fueled speculation.

In response, the Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, who stood in as acting Majority Leader, told the House that the NPP leadership had no information regarding the Finance Minister’s whereabouts or the delay.

This explanation did little to satisfy the Minority, who accused the government of deliberately avoiding the budget presentation.

Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Agbodza, argued that this may be a calculated move by the NPP to frustrate a potential new government after the 2024 elections.

The Minority further warned of dire consequences should the situation persist, noting that salaries for public sector workers could be affected.

They asserted that if workers face delays in receiving their wages, the NPP government must bear full responsibility.

The mini-budget amount remains listed on the order paper, but with two days elapsed and no presentation forthcoming.

Minority MPs have vowed to keep pushing for accountability, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.
