Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has filed a motion in a U.S. court requesting a reduction in the $18 million in damages awarded against him in a civil case brought by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Agyapong’s legal team submitted a cross-motion for summary judgment arguing that the jury’s decision should be reconsidered and the damages adjusted.
The motion, filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, seeks to have the verdict reviewed and possibly reduced.
The case stems from a long-standing legal battle between Agyapong and Anas. The journalist had sued Agyapong for defamation following a series of public accusations and allegations made against him by the politician. After legal proceedings, the court ruled in favor of Anas, awarding him $18 million in damages.
In the motion, Agyapong’s lawyers cited legal precedents emphasizing that while jury verdicts should be respected, courts have the power to modify damages when necessary.
They argued that the amount awarded was excessive and called for a fair reassessment of the judgment.
