No more free electricity – Energy Minister to heads of SOEs

The Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Abdulai Jinapor, has cautioned State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) against the misuse of electricity, emphasising that power is no longer free and must be paid for in full.

He stressed that a change in attitude towards electricity consumption is necessary to prevent serious financial challenges within the energy sector.

The Minister warned that failure to adopt a responsible approach to energy consumption could have dire consequences.

“Power is no longer free.

Electricity is no more free, and we must all pay for the power that we use,” he stated.

He noted that the current state of energy management requires a collective effort to ensure sustainability.

Mr Jinapor further highlighted the importance of efficiency in power usage, particularly among SOEs, which he accused of excessive consumption without adequate financial accountability.

He urged institutions to prioritise energy conservation and payment compliance to avoid putting undue pressure on the national grid and government resources.

“If we don’t change our attitude, we will run into huge problems,” the Minister warned.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing payment regulations and called for stricter measures to prevent financial losses in the energy sector.

He served this warning while speaking in an interview with Metro TV on Wednesday, March 26.
